About
We were approached by a close film director* for Denise Ho's new music video. Denise Ho is a Hong Kong/Canadian singer and actress. With 12 studio albums and many film credits, Ho is a household name in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. In 2014, Ho was blacklisted by the Chinese government following her support for pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong.
Because of her political views, Ho was banned from leaving Hong Kong, and thus could not return to Canada where she grew up in her adolescent years. Her new song was a love-letter to the home she lost, and the video had to reflect that.
The renders we created had to be both photo realistic and emulate VHS footage to complement the scarce videos Ho had shot herself as a teenager.

We were tasked with recreating Ho’s childhood room through a collection of personal photos. The main focus of the room was the multitude of posters on the walls – reflecting Ho’s teenage obsession with singer Anita Mui, they served as a narrative center to her coming-of-age story and changing relationship to her home.

Additionally, in the back-and-forth creative process, the video director became increasingly interested in the wireframe look of the room and the narrative possibilities it provided. Thus, this sequence also became part of the final result.
